What is FreeAgent?

Edinburgh-built accounting software designed around how UK sole traders and small limited companies actually file — Self Assessment, VAT and Corporation Tax in one place. Owned by NatWest, and free for as long as you hold a qualifying business account with them.

The headline is the bank deal. A sole trader with a Mettle account gets the full product for nothing, indefinitely, provided they make one transaction a month. That is not a trial and it is not a stripped tier, and a surprising number of people in exactly that position are paying a competitor instead.

The software itself is built around the UK tax year rather than adapted to it, which shows in small ways that matter: Self Assessment, VAT returns and Corporation Tax handled where you already do the invoicing, with a running estimate of what you will owe.

Prices exclude VAT, and the advertised monthly figures are half-price for the first six months. The number to budget with is the second one.

What does FreeAgent cost in the UK?

Plan Price What you get
Free (with qualifying bank) £0 NatWest, RBS, Ulster Bank, or Mettle with one transaction a month. The full product, not a trial.
Sole trader £9.50/month for 6 months, then £19 Excluding VAT. £95 for the first year billed annually, then £190.
Partnership / LLP £13.50/month for 6 months, then £27 Excluding VAT.
Limited company £16.50/month for 6 months, then £33 Excluding VAT. Self Assessment, VAT and Corporation Tax.

What the free tier actually gets you

Free for as long as you hold a business current account with NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland or Ulster Bank, or a Mettle account with at least one transaction a month. Not a limited trial — the full product.

What to watch on the price

Sole trader is £9.50 a month for the first six months then £19; limited company £16.50 then £33; partnership £13.50 then £27. All excluding VAT. The £19 shown here is the standing sole trader rate, not the introductory one. Read from the vendor page on 29 August 2026.

Read FreeAgent's privacy notices on 30 August 2026. They do not mention model training. FreeAgent also runs a trust centre at trustcentre.freeagent.com which we have not read. It holds your full financial records, so this is worth asking.

The Torus verdict on FreeAgent

If you bank with NatWest, RBS, Ulster or Mettle, this is free accounting software built for UK filing, and not knowing that is costing UK sole traders real money. Check your bank before you pay anyone for this category.
