What is DeepL?
German-built machine translation widely judged more natural than the general-purpose alternatives, especially across European languages. Also translates whole documents while keeping the formatting intact, which is the part that saves the time.
The quality difference against general-purpose translation is real and most obvious in the direction that matters: text that reads as though a native speaker wrote it, rather than as though it was translated.
Document translation with formatting preserved is the feature that saves actual hours. Translating a formatted quote and getting back a formatted quote, rather than a wall of text to rebuild, is the difference between using it and not bothering.
What does DeepL cost in the UK?

What the free tier actually gets you
A free tier with character limits. Enough for occasional translation of short text.
What to watch on the price
We are not quoting an entry price. The pricing page did not return its plan table to us on 29 August 2026. The link goes to the live page.
Does DeepL train AI models on your data?
Yes
DeepL states: "We process the content you upload and their translations or improvements for a limited period of time to train and improve our neural networks and algorithms." This entry covers the general service; we have not separately read the DeepL Pro or API terms, which vendors in this category usually govern differently. Do not paste a client contract into the free translator. Read on 30 August 2026.

Who is DeepL for?
A good fit for
- Exporters
- Businesses with European suppliers
- Multilingual teams
Not for
- Legally binding translation without a human check — fluent is not the same as correct
- Languages outside its range, which is narrower than the general-purpose alternatives
The Torus verdict on DeepL
The best output quality in this category for European languages, and the document translation preserves formatting properly. Have a human read anything that creates a legal obligation.
