What is Canva?
Templates for everything a small business prints or posts, plus generative image and text tools and a brand kit that keeps colours and fonts consistent. The tool most likely to replace an occasional freelance design spend outright.
For a plumber who needs a leaflet, a Facebook post and something for the side of the van, this replaces a few hundred pounds of freelance work a year and the week of waiting that came with it.
The brand kit is the underrated part. Once colours, fonts and logo are locked in, anyone in the business can make something that does not look like a different company made it.
On data, the AI terms are thinner than they should be. They confirm a setting exists without saying where it starts, which is why this entry records no answer. Look at your own Privacy Settings before you upload client artwork.
What does Canva cost in the UK?
| Plan | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Free | £0 | Large template library and basic editing. Most small businesses run on this for months. |
| Pro | £100/year | One person. Brand kit, background remover, premium content. |
| Business | £180/year per person | Team brand controls and approvals. |
| Enterprise | Contact sales | Custom. No published price. |
What the free tier actually gets you
Free plan covers a large template library and basic editing. Most small businesses run on it for months before finding a reason to upgrade.
What to watch on the price
Pro is £100 a year for one person; Business is £180 a year per person. Priced in pounds, which is unusual for a non-UK vendor and removes the exchange-rate problem most of this directory carries. Read 29 August 2026.
Does Canva train AI models on your data?
Vendor does not publish it
Canva's AI Product Terms say only that "Your Privacy Settings control whether Canva and our Technology Partners may use your data to improve our AI services for everyone." That confirms a control exists without saying which way it is set by default, and states no separate position for Teams or Enterprise. Open your own Privacy Settings and look. Read on 29 August 2026.

What do people use Canva for?
- Produce a van livery mock-up, a leaflet and a social post that match
- Keep brand colours consistent across staff who have never opened design software
- Resize one design for six different placements
What does Canva connect to?
- Mailchimp
- HubSpot
- Google Drive
- Dropbox
Where does Canva fall short?
- The AI training default is not stated plainly in the AI terms — you have to go and check your own settings
- Template-based work looks template-based, and competitors often pick the same one
- Not a replacement for a designer on anything that has to be genuinely distinctive
Who is Canva for?
A good fit for
- Sole traders
- Trades businesses
- Local retail
- Anyone without a designer
Not for
- Anyone who needs work that looks unlike their competitors — templates are shared, and in a small town two firms often pick the same one
- Print jobs with strict colour requirements, where a designer and a proper prepress file still win
The Torus verdict on Canva
The best value in this directory for a business with no design capability, and it bills in pounds. Go into Privacy Settings on day one and decide the training question for yourself, because the terms will not decide it for you.
